For more than ten successful years now Westwell Publishing have been running short sketching courses on Lundy, a granite island off the North Devon coast at the mouth of the Bristol Channel.
It is a unique and very special place, no traffic, no ringing telephones, no deadlines, just freedom, fresh air and the cries of the sea-birds. This is the perfect opportunity to really get away from it all and relax with a friendly group of like minded individuals.
This year's sketching breaks will run during the week 6-13 September 2008 (7, 5 or 4 days duration are available).
During the course, we shall explore through drawing and painting, some of the many contrasting qualities of this beautiful and historic island, from the rugged drama of the West side, sculpted and carved by the Atlantic storms, to the softer, more gentle slopes of the East side, sheltered from the prevailing winds.
Whether you are a complete beginner or a proficient amateur, there will be ample opportunity to test your abilities, indulge your enthusiasms and perhaps try something just a little different.
Flexibility and informality are the keynotes of the course which can be as intensive or as relaxed as you wish it to be. The group will meet each morning after breakfast to discuss the programme for the day; some structured sessions will be included, and Peter, your tutor, will be available throughout the day for advice and support if needed or requested. The working day will end with the group coming together to discuss each other's experiences and achievements, prior to the evening meal.
The group will be accommodated in Millcombe, an elegant Georgian building and former residence of the Lords of Lundy; where we will breakfast together. Lunch may be taken in the Marisco Tavern where the group usually gathers for the evening meal and a glass or two of something refreshing(!),after which there will be the opportunity to join in a guided walk exploring the island.
Millcombe offers 2 single, 2 double & 3 twin-bedded rooms; 3 bathrooms & WCs. The reception rooms of this former Manor House are almost exactly as the Heaven family left them nearly 100 years ago.
