The battery from the shore © C J Webster

Brazen Ward is the best preserved remains of an early gun battery on Lundy but its date is uncertain. It is often assumed to date from the Civil War but excavations by the Lundy Field Society in 1967 recovered pottery which appeared to be earlier and suggested an Elizabethan date. The remains comprise a heavily-built rectangular building with a wall leading to the south where there are further, more fragmentary remains. There are numerous other earthen platforms around the island and 18th-century sources speak of the remains of about 40. One is visible across the bay from Brazen Ward when the vegetation is low.
