Known as Marisco Castle after the lords of the island in the 13th century, the castle stands at the southern end of the island overlooking the Landing Bay.

Following the downfall of William de Marisco Henry III ordered the Sheriff of Devon to construct a masonry tower in a good location with a bailey-wall. This tower is presumably the castle "keep" but most of the surviving walls of the castle appear to date from the time of the civil war and excavations have been inconclusive.

The castle was certainly refortified in the Civil War by Thomas Bushell who held it for the King and claimed that he built the castle from the ground at great expense.
